3d movies bad for you

We knew it: 3-D films are trying to kill you with migraines and crappy vision. A new study proves the relationship between 3-D and headaches. But will this stop Hollywood's slate of 32 (and counting) upcoming 3-D films?

A study at the University of California Berkeley found that 3-D movies can cause eyestrain along with headaches. Apparently, 3-D doesn't allow our eyes to "follow the rules" because we're busy focusing on things both far and near at the same time, hence the headaches and blurred vision. Professor Martin Banks explained this to VOA Health.
"You're taking that normal relationship which has been coupled in the brain for years and you're changing it. And what we showed is that can cause fatigue."

TV complaints files with the FCC

Fox garners nearly half of all indecency complaints filed to the FCC, according to a new study by SNL Kagan.

The study found 48% of viewers complaints are directed at Fox programming, followed by CBS (18.6%), ABC (18.4%), NBC (14.5%) and the CW (.5%).

Probably not coincidentally, that's also the usual ranking of the broadcast networks' popularity with young adults.

A "Family Guy" episode from March 2009 is responsible for the most complaints -- 188,368. In the episode, Stewie drinks horse semen instead of milk.

Also in the study, CNN, surprisingly, topped the list among cable networks as drawing the most complaints.

The study notes that while complaints filed against broadcast networks are directed at offensive content, much of the cable complaints are about objections to political material.

One quasi-exception: In the No. 2 position are complaints filed against the term "tea-bagging" on news programs.

Studio must pay for destroying Jesus Christ

Columbia Pictures is learning the hard way not to f--- with the Jesus.

A lawyer for Brazil's Catholic Church has gone public with a dispute over the destruction of Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ the Redeemer statue in November's global hit "2012." Seems the church didn't enjoy the scene as much as we did, prompting archdiocese attorney Claudine Dutra to tell the AFP that Columbia didn't get a proper copyright license to depict the country's most famous statue.

Brazil uses a variation on U.S. copyright law, granting copyright to the author of a work until his death, then to his estate or heirs for another 70 years. Christ the Redeemer was created in 1931 by French artist Paul Landowski on commission from the Rio archdiocese. Landowski died in 1961, and the archdiocese says it holds copyright until 2032.

At least that's the church's argument. Dutra told the AFP that it controls the statue but approves "99 percent" of usage requests. She said the church turned down Columbia's pitch because the plan was to show the Redeemer being toppled by a giant wave.

Columbia, on the other hand, tells us it did get a license, just not from the church.

"Acting on a good faith belief that the estate of the sculptor of the statue held the copyright, we sought and received their permission to use the image in the movie," a studio rep told us. "We are currently in discussions with the archdiocese in hopes of reaching an agreement in this matter."

An entity called the Artists Rights Society represents the Landowski estate. If ARS told Columbia that it was the proper licensor (and not the Archdiocese), that would complicate this matter further. It also might explain why the church's lawyer has done a lot of talking but hasn't actually filed any lawsuit against the studio.

Negotiations have apparently been going on since December. The church says it is still trying to figure out its damages, which will depend on an expert's evaluation. But despite the tough talk, the Catholics might just be waiting for a bit of confession.

"We want Columbia Pictures to publicly declare that it did not intend to cause offense," Dutra said.

Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant

Tiger Woods' alleged mistresses will soon have a new spotlight in which to shine. Howard Stern is organizing the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant, which seeks to crown a $100,000 winner based on criteria such as personality, talent and a swimsuit competition.

According to the Times of London, four of Woods' purported mistresses have signed on to participate in the pageant. At least one of his reported lovers, however, may not be able to attend. TMZ reports that Rachel Uchitel, the vivacious New York night club host, cannot participate due to a rumored confidentiality settlement between her and Woods.

"Zoolander 2" in the Works

Justin Theroux, who had a hand in writing both "Tropic Thunder" and "Iron Man 2," is heading to Fashion Week in Paris to prepare to write the "Zoolander" sequel.

Ben Stiller, star, director and co-writer of the original, is working on a new script with Theroux, who plans to "immerse himself on what is current in fashion," a source has told Deadline Hollywood.

"Zoolander" was released a couple of weeks after 9/11 and fared poorly at the box office as a result, taking in a lowly $45 million. But it's subsequent DVD sales, near ubiquity on cable TV and the constant requests Stiller gets to do "Blue Steel," Derek Zoolander's signature look, are all testament to how popular the film truly is.

Assuming they can get Owen Wilson back on board, as well as cameos on a par with the original -- Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich, David Bowie -- the sequel could easily take in three times the original.
